LINKS&C

As I have noted before, most of these sites are either people I feel wouldn't have any objection to my links or who are bands and/or public institutions or sites.  If your personal site is linked on this page and don't want it to be, please send me mail and I'll remove you promptly!   Also, please drop me a note if you find a broken or changed link, if you have a few seconds.  Thanks!

Note -- to the best of my knowledge, there are no Geocities links on this page.  This omission is intentional.  I have had too much trouble over the years with Geocities links myself, the servers seem to be abominably slow and the pages tend to evaporate overnight with some frequency, for no apparent reason.  I avoid them, myself, and wouldn't put a guest through it either.

Explanations included, along with disclaimers if I feel they're necessary:

LITERARY SITES AND AUTHORS

NONELIST SITE

Official web site (maintained by Jens MÖllenhoff, a NoneList member with greater web skills than the rest of us) of the NoneList mailing list.  NoneList is a discussion of music, poetry, literature, art and day-to-day life sponsored by the OneList list server.  Check out the page for archives of literary work and list subscription info:

Nonelist Page

AARONBABE (AARON HOWARD)

A NoneLister whose work and web site are well worth perusing:

Aaron's Site

This may or may not be active -- sorry if the link's broken!

"Melanie's Weblog"

The weblog of Melanie Haupt, a periodic NoneList contributor who's a poet and (lucky her) a music journalist:

Mojo

DAVID RHAESA

Another NoneLister, whose poetry is wonderful.  Take a lunch, he's got a lot of it here on the page and once you start, you'll probably keep going:

I don't currently have a link, because I'm not sure David has an active web site -- sorry!

COSMIC BASEBALL ASSOCIATION

Web site of NoneLister R. Bentz Kirby.  I can't really explain it -- it would be faster if you just went and looked at the page:

COSMIC BASEBALL ASSOCIATION

JENS MÖLLENHOFF

Homepage of the man who chose to be the conservator of the NoneList poetry/literature/art archive.   And a brave one he is:

Jens

RITA MAE BROWN

A brave and prolific writer, whose "cat mysteries" have thus far failed to thrill me, but the rest of whose work I like quite well:

Rita Mae Brown

ANDREI CODRESCU

I had always loved Codrescu's NPR commentaries.  He has a wonderful command of a language that isn't even his first.  His SF novel was well worth reading, and the book 'Ay Cuba' -- just check out the site and look at your local library or bookstore:

NON-LITERARY FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES

NATHAN BAKER'S HOMEPAGE

Nathan is a friend I met on America Online while we were both trawling for romantic interests, back when I was still ostensibly single.  While we mutually agreed there probably wasn't sufficient interest in all ways to make an 800-mile romance practicable, we're still in communication on a semi-regular basis.  Nathan is a very talented, inspired photographer, web designer and electronic visual artist who is currently living in Kansas City, MO.  Please be advised some of the material on his page may not be suitable for all viewers.

Nathan's Homepage

If that link doesn't work, I know this one does:

HUMOR/SATIRE

LANDOVER BAPTIST CHURCH

Warning -- religious satire ahead.  If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen, you know the drill:

Landover Baptist

MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS

This is actually the official Australian fan website.  I include in instead of any of the others because I feel it's the funniest and most in the spirit of Python, and because it appears to have the most comprehensive set of links.  The first screen after the "CLICK HERE" is more than worth the price of admission, if you're old school, too:

Aussie Official Python Site

MIKE JASPER

A real freakin a**hole from Texas with whom I fairly frequently agree, and who's entertaining even if he's writing about something I couldn't care less about, or something with which I disagree.  Which is high praise, indeed.

So, Sue Me...

THE SPARK

A link I found on Mike Jasper's site -- it's really very entertaining, if you have fifteen or more minutes to kill at some point:

The Spark

RED GREEN

This CBC import is sort of like a cross between "Home Improvement" and writers with brains and a sense of humor.  The Red Green Show takes place in a run-down fishing lodge in the backwoods of Canada and is held together almost entirely by duc-tape:

The New Red Green Show

POLITICS/SOCIAL COMMENTARY

TURN LEFT

My political sympathies, if you hadn't guessed already:

TurnLeft Website

BE VERY AFRAID

One of those "think about it" deals:

Think about this

HATE WATCH

The real "hate watch" site.  White supremacists, the NRA and Scientologists have bought up so many legitimate sounding sites that progressive organizations might have used -- it's always good to be careful where you go for your information:

The hatewatch site no longer exists because its designers had feared something that actually didn't happen -- they feared that the Internet would provide fascistic knuckleheads with an opportunity to organize cheaply.  It turns out many of them are illiterate, some are computer illiterate, and even more of them are total Luddites who don't trust having the wire coming into their house to make the connection (i.e. if you can get stuff from out there, out there can get stuff from in here, too).

Good when something goes away for the right reason, isn't it?

INFIDELS

If you're sensitive about religion or skeptics, move on along.  In fact, if you're sensitive about religion or skeptics, skip my whole page, but that's another song:

Infidels

JOHN HOWARD KUNSTLER

I'm not exactly a dogmatic believer in this guy's stuff, but he definitely has a point about sustainable communities and all the errors we've made in community development which have ruined and are still ruining our neighborhoods:

Kunstler Site

PONTIAC WEB SITE

A site devoted to Pontiacs.  I like all vintage GM cars, frankly, but this is the most comprehensive single source for any single brand line I ever saw, and it's done with LOVE:

Pontiac Server

NON-LITERARY PERFORMING ARTS (MUSIC, COMEDY, ETC.)

KELLY RICHEY BAND

You've already seen this one, but I'll repeat it -- my ex works with Kelly.  She's an inspired and talented guitarist and songwriter who tours incessantly -- catch her in your town:

Kelly Richey Band

BILL HICKS

The most official Bill Hicks site I know -- run by old friends of his from Texas:

Sacred Cow Productions

LOPPYBOGYMI

Don't ask me, I just saw them years ago when my ex used to run a live radio show on Cincinnati community owned station WAIF.  They're a combination of acid jazz, rock and roll, hip hop and Fishbone, with a dose of Primus thrown in for good measure:

TWELVE-POUND EMPERORS

HAROLD REYNOLDS'S HOMEPAGE

Harold Reynolds is a Canadian animal lover who maintains several humorous lists, such as the "Bad Kitty List", the "Bad Dog List", the "Bad Horse List" and, yes you heard me right, the "Bad Ignana List".  If you have any of the most common household pets, you'll derive great amusement from these lists, which consist of phrases which those of us sharing our houses with these animals should make them write on the chalkboard ala Bart Simpson:

THE "EDUCATE, DON'T AMPUTATE!" WEBSITE

Cat conservatorship information, including -- most importantly, for me at least -- comprehensive information on the tribulations and possible dangers of declawing cats.  If you have a cat and you're not sure, and you don't know the exact procedure required to amputate the claws and toes, please find that information on this site and read it three or four times before you make that vet appointment:

(Anti-)Declawing Information

POSITIVELY MISCELLANEOUS

LEARN2.COM

This site contains audited directions for many household (and non-household, for that matter) procedures like replacing faucets, checking the oil in your car, building fires, etc.   By "audited" I mean there are people who check the submitted instructions to make sure they work.  The information is great, though the interface is sometimes a little slow -- usually, it's worth waiting:

CITYBEAT

Cincinnati's alternative free weekly (stole most of the staff from Everybody's News several years ago, a situation from which EBN never quite recovered).  If you want to know anything about entertaining yourself, your family, or guests from out of town, read READ
READ:

Cincinnati CityBeat

THE STRAIGHT DOPE

Cecil explains it all.   A web site devoted to Cecil Adams's "The Straight Dope" column which runs, among other places, in Cincinnati's "CityBeat" free weekly:

USELESS KNOWLEDGE

A paean to trivia of all kinds, from how a fly takes off from the ceiling to when the states were entered into the Union.  Great for O/Cs like Mr. Nowikowski and your author:
